The book I am reading right now is called "Dying For Revenge" by Eric Jerome Dickey. As you can see on the photo, my cat Puffy and I had a small dispute on who the book actually belongs to, but that is all handled now.
I started reading Eric's books like 8 years ago. It started with "Friends and Lovers", then "Cheaters", and after "Milk In My Coffee" I was officially a chainreader. The good thing was that by the time I got hooked, he had already put out a couple of books, so I could catch up without having to wait on the next release.
As you can tell by the titles, his books were mainly relationship-based, with his latest books he has tried something new: CRIME! ;-) I gotta say, I love it. This book that Puffy claimed is the last of the Gideon-trilogy. He is a hot hitman (well, at least in my mind he is hot), who because of a job gone bad becomes a target himself. Of course it wouldn't be an EJD if it wasn't a little steamy, too. So, go get it - cause Puffy said so! ;-)
I must honestly say 2008 was one remarkable year for me. Work, friends, travel, love and CHANGE - I think 08 will stay on my mind for a while. Here are some of my highlights...
Work...
Sex And The City I am a big "SATC"-fan. I didn't care much about it when the show first came out, but when I had to watch "Season 1" on DVD for work, I fell in love. Beyond the shoes and the sex, the idea of love, looking for it, losing it, finding it again, the wisdom behind it and of course the meaning of friendship: couldn't help but love it. Of course meeting the cast was something I had been looking forward to for a while. When "Sex And The City: The Movie" was coming out, Sarah J. Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis made their way to Germany. The interview junket was great, the premiere was fabolous and all in all it was a nice experience.

Will Smith Smooch This was an interesting one. I went to the "Hancock" press conference. Mr. Smith and Charlize Theron were there to promote their latest movie. When of the journalists asked Will what kind of superpower he wishes for, he said he'd like to read people's minds. He then pointed at me and said he could read mine and he knew what I wanted. . He got up, walked my way and planted two kisses on my cheeks. Was that what I was thinking? Nah, but he smelled good nevertheless, so I'll take it ;-).
Kiss, kiss...
Waaaalll-EEE This was pretty funny, too. I interviewed Wall-E when he came over to promote his movie. It was adorable.
Eeeee-Vaaaa ;-)
Leonardo DiCaprio This is one of the actors I have great respect for. He is talented, was talented 10 years ago and this I am sure of, he will be even better of an actor in another ten years. I met Leo in Rome on a beautiful fall day. The sun was out, I had a great lunch in a beautiful restaurant on a hill and then had the interview with Leo. He was very pleasant and professional.
Romeo, oh Romeo... ummm Leooo
OBAMA in Berlin This was an an event I gladly assigned for. In the morning I went to the Berlin Tegel airport with a camera team and waited on Barack Obama to land. We then went to the Adlon hotel where hundreds of people where waiting already. When Obama arrived with his entourage he pulled a little trick on everybody waiting out front and went in the back door. After waiting around the hotel for hours the cam team and I headed towards the "Siegessäule" where Obama was to hold his speech. It was a beautiful moment. 250 000 people came to listen and were touched by this man's charisma, swagger and knew history was being made, whether he'd be president or not, he had already left his mark in this little city called Berlin. Well, we all know what happened just four months later.
What I recorded with my cell phone. You might have to turn your head (or screen) for this one ;-)
Waiting for the future Prez
A New Era What a summer... Two of my closest friends went through very important changes: One gave birth to a beautiful baby boy and the other got married to the man of her dreams - and I was there to witness both. Biggest blessings of the year.
Not to forget the "Comeback Of The Seattle Swagger". Didn't see that one coming, but I heard it was here to stay...
Every now and then I miss the place that is home to my parents and that for some reason feels like home to me. I wasn't born there, I wasn't raised there, I only spent my childhood-summers there, I haven't been there in at least 8 years, but I miss it.
My parents were born in a place called Ballica. It's a small village in Turkey, surrounded by tobacco and corn fields. My parents didn't have electricity, had to go to the fountains to get fresh water, milked cows in the mornings and picked up eggs from chicken in the shed. They left their home and came to Germany during the 70's to eventually offer their children not yet born a life beyond what that place with the freshest air ever had to offer.
So I grew up in a place with running water, electricity, eggs and milk out of the supermarket. I was able to do what I wanted with my life and saw most of the world.
Still every now and then -like tonight- I feel drawn to that little place that my parents call home...
"I will drag myself through all the sewers of the world, through every conceivable humiliation and abuse - in order to paint."
I read this quote today, on a wall. I looked it up and found out that German artist Max Beckmann used these words to describe his drive to do what he could do best - paint.
In my opinion and experience there are two types of artists. Those that do it for the validation they expect and need from the outside world - and only for that reason - and those that do it because they have no other choice - and then probably for the first reason as well.
Beckmann continued his sentence with "I must". Two simple words that pretty much describe that he was one of those that had no other choice.
This man lived during the Nazi regime. Once a celebrated painter, he was then ridiculed for his work, lived in exile for years. Him saying he would go through all things bad just to be able to follow his passion is very touching to me.
Some people are lucky enough to posess a gift: They can sing, they can write songs, play an instrument, they can cure sicknesses, they can create the most beautiful picture imaginable.
Once you discover your gift, aren't you supposed to live up to it? If your profession is part of you, you can't take it off or leave it at the door, you can't tune it off. You will get up at 4 in the morning if you have to and won't sleep for 30 hours if need be. Only when you have satisfied that urge, can you lay it to rest. That satisfaction you get when you finish is overwhelming. Only until that next time when your passion takes over again.
That's how how the most amazing gift can become one's biggest curse. That's exactly what a lot of Beckmann's work reflects, especially his many self-portraits. He's been dead for almost 50 years, but I think I get what he was saying.
I know I have been neglecting this blog BIG TIME. Today I happened to come on my page again and saw that somebody from China visited. From China! Wow - whoever you are: 欢迎光临 and do come back:)
So, for my new Chinese friend and everybody else that might happen to care: I will be back more often.
What happened within the last three months? A LOT actually. But the highlight must have been my interview with Leonardo DiCaprio. I met him in Rome. He was extremly friendly and even spoke a couple of words in German (his late grandmother was from here).
The interview was about his new movie "Body Of Lies". DiCaprio plays an undercover agent. Of course the movie is based on the war of terror, but it has an interesting take on it. Leo plays an agent who actually respects the culture and tries to do get the job done with a very different approach. The enemy isn't necessarily the enemy. It's worth to take a second look sometimes. Although I felt like the love-story was a bit enforced, I do like the different approach.
